Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional

Compassion fatigue, also known as secondary traumatic stress, is a mental and physical exhaustion. Compassion fatigue may impact people who work in helping professions. As a result of caring for others, or their emotional pain, symptoms of compassion fatigue include:

• Feeling overwhelmed and exhausted
• Reduced empathy and sensitivity
• Feelings of helplessness and powerlessness
• Feeling detached, numb, and emotionally disconnected
• Intrusive imagery
• A change in world-view

Compassion fatigue is different from burnout, which is more predictable and builds over time. Compassion fatigue can affect anyone who uses their emotions to help others, including those in the legal profession, care facilities, healthcare workers, and personal caregiving experiences.

Compassion fatigue is the result of caring for others and wanting to fix or alleviate the pain that others experience. Compassion fatigue differs from burnout in that burnout is a gradual loss of interest or motivation in one's work and an overall general exhaustion. Compassion fatigue is the result of secondary trauma from caring for other's who may be experiencing trauma or pain that is not associated with the individual giving care.
